Forest School Association
At Wood St Nursery, children from the age of three have the exciting opportunity to attend Forest School!
What is Forest School?
Forest School is a child-led outdoor learning program based on the belief that children learn best through hands-on experiences. It offers children the chance to explore the natural environment, fostering self-confidence, independence, and problem-solving skills.
Through play and exploration, children engage with nature in a meaningful way, developing their imagination and creativity. They also become more resilient, learning new skills such as balancing on logs, climbing trees, and navigating natural obstacles.

Our Approach to Wellbeing
Wellbeing is at the core of our practice. We recognize the social, emotional, and physical needs of each child and provide guidance and support throughout their time in nature. Our goal is to create a safe and nurturing space where children can grow holistically, discovering their strengths and building resilience over time.
We create learner-inspired experiences, where each child has the chance to explore, discover, and challenge themselves in a supportive environment. This approach helps children develop resilience, empathy, and a deeper connection to nature—values that we believe are essential for their future.
Building a Strong Community
At Forest School, we encourage collaboration, problem-solving, and facing challenges together. Over time, children develop a strong sense of community, where character, resilience, and empathy are nurtured. Our goal is to provide children with a safe, engaging space where they can learn about themselves, others, and the world around them.
Meet Our Forest School Teacher
Our Forest School sessions are led by Frances Burley from Strawberry Harlequin Forest School. Frances is a Level 3 Forest School practitioner and a former classroom teacher. She uses her creativity and the surrounding woodland to captivate the children’s imaginations and bring nature-based learning to life.
Frances teaches children important skills such as how to stay safe outdoors using fun games, songs, and stories. These weekly sessions run throughout the school day, giving children a regular opportunity to engage with nature and develop a range of skills.
